I was walking into my apartment the other day and I walked by Fakta, the grocery store in my building. Outside the grocery store, lined up with the 20 or so parked bicycles, was a baby carriage. Now this on it's own wouldn't be so strange, but I quickly noticed, as I was locking my own bike that there was a baby in the carriage! Someone had left their baby completely unattended in a baby carriage outside as they completed their grocery shopping inside! Curious about this, I asked one of my teachers about it in class the next day. According to her, this is a typical practice in Denmark. She says people want their babies to be able to get fresh air, so they'll leave them outside, unattended as they run into stores. No one ever kidnaps them, she says. People don't even think twice about it.
The teacher even told me about an interesting news story about a Danish woman in the US who left her baby outside as she ran into a store. The woman was arrested she really didn't understand what the big deal was.
Just wanted to share that story because I thought it was interesting.
